Alfredo Esteban

December 30, 1946 — July 10, 2021

North Austin Location

Alfredo Esteban was born in San Francisco Del Rincon, Guanajuato, Mexico, on December 30, 1946, and passed away in his sleep the morning of July 10, 2021. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Francisco Esteban, and baby sister, Linda Susanna Esteban.

Alfredo came to the United States at a very young age with his parents. His mother would sit him down in front of the television to watch cartoons, and as he grew older, he became interested in viewing the news. He loved watching the news because there was something about broadcaster Walter Cronkite’s voice that led him to learn English. To Alfredo, Walter wasa hero, and someone special who increased his knowledge of the world.

Alfredo graduated from East High in Kansas City, Missouri, where his love of sports led him to play football, and run cross country. He attended Warrensburg College in Missouri, and later on, the University of Texas at Austin.

As a draftee during the Vietnam War, he opted to serve his country by joining VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America). He was asked to pick a state in which to volunteer, and chose California, as Texas was still a place of riding buggies and horses - no way was he going there. Of all places, he was sent to Manor, Texas, where he stayed with a family whose son would become one of his best friends.

In 1966, Alfredo met his wife, Yolanda, through mutual work at the East Austin Neighborhood Center. After sweeping Yolanda off her feet, the couple became inseparable, and together enjoyed many plays, operas, musicals, concerts and dances. Alfredo wanted a dozen children, but after marriage, five boys, and the birth of their only daughter, Yolanda’s family was complete. Yolanda enjoyed Alfredo’s spontaneous celebrations of birthdays, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day at any given time of the year. A special romantic memory of his wife, was Alfredo bringing her a rose from a neighbor’s yard, on his way home from work.

Recognizing his skill as a writer, Alfredo was offered a position from a prestigious Austinite, but youthful influence persuaded him to go a different route. He instead applied his knowledge to helping others with countless writing assignments, and inspired poetry dedicated to his beautiful wife.

Alfredo is survived by his wife of 51 years, Yolanda E. Esteban; sons, Alfredo Esquivel (Narissa), Luis Esteban (Marchelle), Cristobal “Chris”Esteban (Michelle), Francisco “Frank” Esteban, Miguel Esteban; daughter, Laurelia Serrano (Marcos); fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Francisco Esteban (Joy), Salvador “Chava” Esteban, Antonio “Tony” Esteban (Gloria), Arturo Esteban (Tammy); sister, Angela Dominguez Esteban; and, a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and loved ones.

His wife, Yolanda, leaves these words: “You have been the Love of my life, and you will always be in my heart.
