Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and beloved friend left this earth to be with her heavenly Father on June 11, 2012. The Umlauf family and many other Austinites who knew her will miss her greatly. Angeline Allen was born in Peoria, Illinois and studied the The Chicago Art Institute in the 1930's at a time when few women did so. It was there that she met another talented student, Charles Umlauf. They married in 1937; Charles launched his career in earnest and they started their family together. In 1941, Charles and Angie, who was 5 months pregnant with twins, plus their little son Karl moved from Chicago to Austin Texas. Charles was among the founding faculty at the newly established Art Department at the University of Texas at Austin. To know Angie was to love her. We all witnessed her love for her six children, seven grandchildren, six great-grand children and to her church. Many Austinites knew her through her role as the matriarch of the Umlauf family and her service to the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She was also a poet in her own right and her book of verse was published in 2007. In addition, she was known for her dedication to Charles' career and to his memory. She and Charles bequeathed their home and gardens, his studio, plus hundreds of sculptures to the City of Austin to create a lasting public treasure, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. Angeline was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Charles, her siblings Barbara and Arthur Allen and her grandson Jonathan Umlauf. She is survived by her six children and their spouses: Karl (Shirley) Umlauf of Lorena, TX; Madelon (Michael Eisenstadt) Umlauf of Austin, TX; Lynn Umlauf of New York City; Louis (Tina) Umlauf of Austin TX; Arthur (Mary Grace) of Birmingham, AL and Thomas Umlauf; her grandchildren include: Stuart Umlauf of Livingston, TX; Kurt (Andrea) Umlauf of McKinney, TX; Carla (Cass Cheesar) Umlauf of Austin, TX; Ian Umlauf of New York City; Simon (Ana) Umlauf of Atlanta, GA; Shane Umlauf of Birmingham, AL; as well as the great-grandchildren. The public is invited to memorial for Angeline that will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Austin. TX.
