Betty June West Whitney was born in Oakwood, TX on September 23, 1929, to George Teagle West and Bennie Mae Lankster West. Her family moved to Beaumont, TX, where she attended Amelia Elementary and graduated from Beaumont High School in 1947. While attending Chenier Business School, she met Fred Emory Whitney and the two married on May 28, 1951. They had two children. Ms. Whitney worked in retail for many years at the White House and Gus Mayer in Beaumont, TX; Casual Village and Dillards in New Orleans, LA; and at Macys in New Jersey. Those who knew her will remember an energetic, capable, and well-attired lady, who loved beautiful things. In 2007, Ms. Whitney moved to Austin, Texas.
On September 29, 2015, Ms. Whitney passed away peacefully at home with her children and cats present. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Emory Whitney, who died January 25, 1971. She is
survived by her children, Melanie Whitney and Scott Whitney, both of Austin; her sister, Patsy Ruth Santos of Orange, TX; and 2 nieces, 1 nephew, and their families. A private gathering was held at her
home in Austin on October 22, 2015 to celebrate her life. Burial of her cremains will be held at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Waynesboro, MS on November 21, 2015. In lieu of flowers,
the family has requested that donations in her honor be made to Emancipet in Austin, TX (www.emancipet.org) or to your local no-kill animal shelter.
