Bruce Patrick Wilson was born on January 2, 1946, to Rufus and Trula Tatum Wilson in Columbus (Colorado County), Texas. He was the first of three children born to this union. Bruce departed this life on November 14, 2014. His Mother and Father preceded him in death.
Shortly after his birth, Bruce moved with his family from Columbus, Texas to San Antonio, Texas. He attended San Antonio public and Catholic schools, graduating with honors in 1963. He attended Notre Dame University for his first three college years before being called to active duty with the United States Navy where he served with honor and distinction. Bruce completed his undergraduate education at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. In 1984, Bruce received his Master of Public Administration degree from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), in San Marcos, TX. He was enrolled in the PhD. Program in American Studies at the University of Texas until illness prevented further study.
Bruce worked for the Texas Employment Commission and later the Texas Workforce Commission for 28+ years. He was very proud of the opportunity to serve the people of the State of Texas in roles of increasing responsibility. He especially enjoyed his work as an Office Manager. He was able to work well with all groups of people to achieve the common good. Bruce Wilson was a Precinct Chair in Travis County and was the Political Action Chair of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Bruce also served on the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church in Austin.
Bruce is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Erma; two sons: Shawn Wilson of Houston, and Deverett Morrow of Austin; two brothers: Rufus (Lureta) Wilson of San Antonio; and Joel Wilson. Bruce was also blessed by Erma's family who considered him one of their own and his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and very dear friends.
Bruce Wilson will be remembered at a service at St. James Episcopal Church, 1941Webberville Road, Austin, TX 78721, at a date and time to be determined and at a private memorial service at a later date.
