Carlos Lozano

Carlos Lozano, beloved husband and father, passed away on December 22 ^nd , 2017 with his wife of 54 years, Kathy, at his side. He was in hospice care at Heartland Adult Care in Austin, Texas. His wife, his children and their spouses cared for him in his last days with love and aching hearts. Carlos Lozano was an intelligent, witty, handsome, charming, well-spoken, complex, strong-willed, devoted, and generous man who was astonished that he lived to be over 90 years old.

Carlos was born in San Antonio, Texas on March 7 ^th , 1927 to Daniel Lozano and Maria Gonzales Lozano. His older sister Irma Milburn and little brother Daniel “Pepe” Lozano all grew up on Morales Street in San Antonio. Irma still resides in San Antonio and Pepe is deceased.

Carlos Lozano was a dashing young man and an excellent student who loved reading and studying. He grew up fluent in English and Spanish. He took piano lessons at the encouragement of his mother. Carlos was an Honors student at Thomas Jefferson Highschool in San Antonio where he was also in the ROTC. He graduated high school and attended Texas Tech University at the age of only 17. Near the end of WWII, he applied and was accepted to the Army’s Specialized Training Corp. He went first to Minnesota State University and later Yale to learn Japanese for the war effort. After the war he was stationed in Japan in the 441 ^st Counter Intelligence Corp until his honorable discharge in November of 1946.

When Carlos returned home to San Antonio he finished college on the GI Bill at Trinity University. Later he followed his friend and future best man, Roy Gonzales, to the University of Texas’ dental school in Houston. Carlos always told his children that he planned his future carefully, so that his education and career choice would give him the life and retirement he wanted and encouraged them to do the same.

Carlos entered the Navy as a Lt. J.G. in 1953 where he served as the ship’s dentist on the USS Kermit Roosevelt until 1955. He was also in private practice in San Antonio for a couple of years before deciding that direct patient care was not for him because patients did not follow good dental hygiene. In order to make a difference in dental health for society, especially to prevent dental decay, he decided on public service and began his career at the Texas Department of Public Health. On recommendation by his director, he attended Michigan University for his Master’s degree in public health, paid for by the state. He was the Dental Director for the state of Texas by 1963 where he was influential in achieving public water fluoridation. He worked in public health for over 25 years before retiring in 1988. He then chose to work another 15 years for the IRS before full retirement.

Carlos Lozano met his wife Agnes Kathleen Brown in San Antonio while attending her father Rev. Robert Brown’s church, Divine Redeemer. They were married on August 24 ^th , 1963 immediately after her graduation from Trinity. Maria Louise, Charles and John Lozano were born in the following years and grew up on Mesa Drive in Austin Texas where their mother still resides.

Carlos Lozano was a dedicated son, brother, husband, father, cousin, uncle, public servant, veteran and Christian. He loved the First Presbyterian Church of Austin and attended the original downtown location, the Bull Creek location, and its current location on Mesa Drive. For years, he and Kathy drove the limo that took residents from Westminster to the church. He served on committees & as a deacon, always attended Bible study, and sang in the church choir as a tenor in years past. He lived his Christian faith and gave to his church, his family and to his favorite charities. He also gave of his time and volunteered, helping AID’s patients when that was an unpopular thing to do.

Carlos was an avid book reader, mostly historical and bibliographies. He used to enjoy his Sunday paper. He read a lot about WII and the Holocaust. He would keep lists of words to learn and add to his vocabulary. He amassed quite a large library of books. He also spent years teaching himself the German language.

Carlos loved to travel and to experience the history and the culture of other places. He had amazing health and vitality until his late eighties and missed traveling in the last few years. He and Kathy went to Europe seeing England, France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. They also vacationed in Hawaii and took a cruise to Alaska. He traveled to Germany alone.

His wife Kathy, his daughter Louise and her husband Jay McEvers, his son Charles Lozano, his son John Lozano and his wife Jennifer, his grandkid’s Mercy and Daniel Cockrell, his sister Irma Milburn and her children, his brother’s wife Helen Lozano, his brother’s son Daniel Lozano, and Kathy’s family, will all look to be greeted by Carlos’ warm embrace when it is our turn to pass over. Until we meet again…

Carlos Lozano’s Memorial and celebration of his long life, will be held January 27 ^th , 2017 at First Presbyterian Church on Mesa Drive in Austin Texas at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
