An icon was born
On November 13, 1937 Charlesetta Elizabeth Johnson was birth unto Benjamin and Beulah Johnson in Austin, TX.
A time to grow
In her young childhood years, she accepted Christ at Mt Zion Baptist Church but carried out her journey as a faithful member at St. James Missionary Baptist Church. She was an active member of St. James until her health became a disadvantage, she was no longer able to physically attend in person. This did not stop her at all. In the privacy of her home, she continued to worship and praise through broadcasted sermons, radio and reading the word of God.
Charlesetta was a graduate of the Old Anderson High School in Austin, TX. While there she engaged in the Capezio Club, Twirlers, and was also a Cheerleader.
A life to share
After meeting George Benson and dating a few years, later the two joined in holy matrimony. Together they had 4 beautiful daughters, Jacqueline, Patricia, Audrey and Karen. After becoming a grandmother, she was known to the family as “Mimi”. In her career she worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Brackenridge hospital and also performed on the job as a material handler for Abbott Laboratories until her retirement.
She had a love for fashion and shopping, let’s add a mighty sharp dresser. Her best friend Gwendolyn Singletary of Baltimore, Maryland sent her fashion magazines that kept her up to date and her spirits high. At the prime years in her life she was in glory to cook meals for her family and enjoyed dining out on the weekends. If she wasn’t in a department store or talking on the phone you would definitely find her spending time grooming her yard and pruning rose bushes. Holidays were her favorite time of the year. Charlesetta loved to decorate and spending time with family brought her much delight. She loved taking long walks around the LBJ Library to exercise and enjoyed watching a great football game. Of course, the Dallas Cowboys was her favorite team.
Mimi was a proud mother, exceptional grandmother and grateful great grandmother who was always giving advice and supportive. She enjoyed talking to her best friend Gwen and favorite cousin Janice. She always had funny stories to tell that would make you laugh until tears.
A time to fly
Charlesetta gained her wings and departed life here on earth April 3, 2021 at the golden age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Beulah Johnson, her siblings Liza Lee and Thomas Shields and her middle daughter Audrey Benson.
