Consuelo Nieto

Consuelo (Chelo) Vasquez Nieto, age 91 of Austin, Texas was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on Wednesday February 23rd, 2022. She was born December 6th, 1930 in Eagle Pass, the youngest child of the late Leon and Raquel (Rodriguez) Vasquez of San Antonio, Texas.

Mother had a wonderful childhood growing up in Eagle Pass with her two older brothers and two older sisters as she was the baby of the family. The family moved to San Antonio Texas and attended El Divino Salvador Methodist Church where she met the pastor’s son Leo Nieto in the Methodist Youth Ministry who eventually became her husband on June 16th 1953. Consuelo graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio with a bachelor’s degree in Education and was a member of the university’s choir. They moved to Dallas Texas where her husband attended seminary at Southern Methodist University. There they brought their first of four sons (David) into the world. They moved to their first church assignment in Weslaco Texas where she was the church pianist and their second son (Mark) was born. Shortly thereafter they were assigned a new church in Fort Worth Texas where (Jonathan) was born. Lastly, they landed in Austin Texas and had their last child (Timothy). Mother continued her education and obtained a Master degree in Bilingual Education from the University of Texas at Austin. She taught at Ridgetop Elementary school as a third grade bilingual teacher for several years. She then started to work at the University Of Texas Law School in the Dean of students office as an administrative professional. She had the honor and privilege of working with many law professors including Sir Basil Markesinis and then law professor US Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Mother loved her boys and was a devout Christian at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Austin. She loved to sing and was in the choir at her church. She loved to garden and loved to make ceramics with her sister Elizabeth. Consuelo’s doctor described her as one of the most “graceful “people he had ever met. Consuelo leaves a legacy of God’s gracious love through her children, grandchildren and to everyone she has met.

She is preceded in death by her husband Rev Leo D Nieto, her son David Leo Nieto, her parents Leon and Raquel Vasquez, her sister Ruth Salazar, her sister Elizabeth Newhouse, and her brother Joel Vasquez.

Consuelo is survived by her brother Abraham Vasquez of Denver, CO, her son Mark and wife Pamela Nieto of Collinsville, OK, her son Jonathan and wife Patricia Nieto of Pasadena, CA, and her son Timothy Nieto of Austin, TX., eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Consuelo is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She will be sorely missed by all and we should all take comfort in knowing she is in good hands with our Lord and Savior.

There will be a memorial service at Saint Johns United Methodist Church with Rev Hilary Marchbanks and Cheryl Broome officiating located at: 2140 Allandale Rd, Austin, TX 78756 on March 25th at 11:00 am. The following day on the 26th of March Consuelo’s remains will be interred at Mission Burial Park with Bishop Joel Martinez and Rev. Virgilio Vasquez-Garza officiating located at 1700 SE Military Dr, San Antonio, Tx. 75214 at 11:30 am.
