Colonel Westphal was born in Bonduel, WI. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran and Bonduel High School's, after which he attended Whitewater and Oshkosh State colleges. He enlisted in the Air Force in May, 1951 and retired in 1981 after 30 years of service. He was awarded the Silver Star, 7 Air Force Crosses, 34 Air Medals and the Bronze Star for gallantry in action. Among his other awards are 2 Legion of Merits, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service. Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 8 Oak leaf clusters, Army good conduct medal, and the Combat Readiness medal. Colonel Westphal flew 512 combat missions in Vietnam as an F-4 fighter aircraft commander. He is credited with one MIG-21 destroyed. He is a life member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, and the Retired Officer's Assn. He was also a member of the Red River Rats.
