David Duane Fortenberry

A devoted son, husband, father, and brother, David Duane Fortenberry, Sr. passed away in south Austin on Monday, October 16th, 2023.

David was born on February 17, 1957, in Houston, Texas to June Dee Holleman and Donald Burries Fortenberry. Most of his childhood David lived in the greater Houston area, apart from a single year when his family moved to New Jersey. In 1975, David joined the Navy soon after earning his GED.

After discharge, he moved to Austin and began working for the City of Austin where he used his welding skills to maintain boilers in their electrical plants for over thirty years. He retired in May 2023. He married Sylvia Ann Aros in 1990 and together they raised three children, Adam Zachary, Candice June, and David Duane Fortenberry, Jr.

David loved cooking, playing video games, going fishing, and listening to classic rock and jazz. He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Fortenberry, his mother, June Kindschy, his father Don Fortenberry, stepfather “Kinch” Kindschy, and granddaughter Melodee Marceline Garcia.

David is survived by his three children, Adam, Candice, and David Fortenberry, two grandchildren, Genesis and Alejandro, his sister Julia Gatliff, two stepsisters, Nancy Lou Nys and Cheryl Ann Kindschy, several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

A Life Celebration will be held for David on Friday November 17, 2023, at 2 PM, at Southwest Christian Church, 10500 Old Manchaca Rd., Austin, Texas 78748.
