Mr. Dennis Leon McCleary died peacefully at his Georgetown, Texas home on Wednesday, May 11. Dennis was born on June 28, 1945 in Freeport, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-three years and retired as a Navy Chief. Dennis received commendations for his courageous actions during the U.S.S. Forrestal fire July of 1967 in the Gulf of Tonkin. After his time in the Navy, Dennis worked for the Department of Defense supporting the United States Navy. Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, J. B. and Verlan McCleary, and his brother, Jeff McCleary. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Pentecost McCleary, sons, Darrin and Christopher McCleary, brother, Bob (Bette) McCleary and sister-in-law, Rachel McCleary. He is further survived by six grandchildren, Cody, Dennis Leon II, Jonathon, Savannah, and Skye McCleary, and Danielle (Will) Hogan. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Emily Hogan and Ayden McCleary. Dennis had many passions including classic cars, fifties music, antiques, bowling, travel, and being with friends and family, especially the Romeos, his men's breakfast group. His friend, Sharon Lavender described him best as "a sweet, honorable, kind and joyful soul who has slipped away, diminishing all of us". The family would like to thank their friends and family for the outpouring of love and support. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 20th at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 410 East University Ave. Georgetown, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army are requested.
