October 17, 1974 — January 6, 2014

North Austin Location

Eric John Voigt was born on October 17, 1974 and died on January 6, 2014 at the age of 39. Born in New Prague, Minnesota, he became an Austin, Texas resident at the age of 11 and a Colorado transplant in his early 20's.

He recently called Pflugerville home, but his heart was always in Denver with the snow-capped mountains; and he promised he would return to Colorado someday.
The consummate optimist, he always found a way to look at the bright side of life and rarely complained. Eric's ambitions included becoming the best art director ever, a gourmet specialty cook and a radio broadcaster.
He pursued his life's passion in art by acquiring his dream job with Integer, Denver, one of the larger ad agencies in the country. Integer catered to two of his other life's passions, travel and the beach. He spent a week in Hawaii to participate in a week-long photo shoot with model Ivana Bozilovic (boze-a-lo-vitch) She is probably most famous for her appearance in Wedding Crashers.

He was also blessed to be a large part of the casting for various high profile photo shoots including the Raiderettes and the Andy Irons campaign.
He was humble when accepting accolades for the Pepsi challenge concept "The Pepsi Giving Machine" that he spearheaded. If you look, you can find footage of him on the Denver, channel 7, News as the spokesperson on the project.

In addition to a Bachelor's degree in Advertising, he also had an Associate's degree in English Communications and was happy to generously use his time, talent and treasure for his church.

Few people know this about Eric, but The Disco Stu character on the "Simpsons" is, as he put it, "was a complete rip off" of a cartoon character he created in high school named Disco Dave. Disco Stu appeared 3 years after Eric had been using his character. While almost identical in appearance to Disco Dave, Disco Stu talks in the 3rd person whereas, Eric's character, Disco Dave, rarely spoke and was mostly seen nodding to a tune going on in his head. (Much like Eric)
Also, when Eric ate Cap'n Crunchberries, he ate every single yellow Cap'n Crunch before he ate any of the red Crunchberries. When they added different colored Crunchberries, he stopped eating it all together. He disliked yellow #5, avoided brown M&M's, but he was vehemently NOT superstitious.
He adored Star Wars movies and watched each one in the series in chronological order with all three of his girls many times! He felt blessed to have the opportunity to choose his daughter's name "Kirra," and few people know that she was named after an island in Australia. Her middle name is from his grandmother, Wilmay, whom he treasured. Upon close inspection you will find that the phonetic pronunciation of Kirra's name backwards is Eric (Ar-rik). His grandfather, Eldrid, gave him his firm faith foundation and is the reason why he was able to be the strong, Christian example and the dedicated father and loving husband that he was.

Eric battled chronic ulcerative Colitis since being diagnosed in 1997; and other than the rapid, sometimes drastic, weight fluctuations, you would never know he was ill. He had a very painful, sometimes debilitating condition, which he hardly ever complained about. His condition was rare and resulted in the secondary condition that caused his liver to fail. He was one of the unique individuals with cirrhosis of the liver, who seldom drank alcohol; and 5 years ago he had to quit completely. Eric only had one cigarette in his life, and when he was ready to light it, he held the cigarette out in front of him because he didn't realize it had to be in his mouth to light it. Honestly, you would be hard pressed to find out who gave it to him.

Eric John Voigt is survived by his wife of 7 years, Sherri; his three daughters Mercedes Herron, TiAnna Herron, and Kirra May Voigt; his, Father, Larry Voigt; Mother, Judith Ann Voigt and sister, Katie Ann Hughes and her husband, Steve Hughes. His grandmother, Eunice Voigt; and his maternal Grandparents, Eldrid and Wilmay Karnitz also survive Eric.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Voigt. He also has numerous aunts and uncles and cousins from around the country but especially from Minnesota.

He was also predeceased by his beloved Min Pin dog, Kirby Flower Voigt, named after the former Minnesota Twins outfielder; Kirby Puckett (who was inducted into the Hall of Fame). The family Eric got Kirby from had named her "Flower", which he made her middle name. And yes, he named her "Kirby" before he knew she would be a girl dog.

Memorials: Announcement.
The sad truth is that although I had insane devotion to my soul mate and the love of my life, caring for him became costly. This is a fact which, I, as his widow, now face. Our request is just as simple as Eric's would be: we have set up a memorial fund to assist us with handling his medical and memorial costs. Left without life insurance, although we have medical insurance the costs were and will continue to be substantial.
End of life or hospice care, and all of the nursing care associated with his untimely passing will supersede the funds already raised on our behalf.

There are two very distinct ways you can give: We have a fund currently set up at Holy Word Austin containing all of the funds available at this time. If you wish to contribute to this fund, please send them to Holy Word Austin c/o "Eric Voigt Memorial Fund" 10601 Bluff Bend Dr., Austin, TX 78753 Phone: (512) 836-0660.
You can write the check to Holy Word Austin and in the subject line please indicate "Eric Voigt Memorial Fund."

Additionally, we have set up a designated PayPal account that you may gift directly by using the email address: EricVoigtMemorialFund@gmail.com this will allow you to provide a gift free from a processing fee. This estate will be handled by Katie Hughes on behalf the widow Sherri Voigt to ensure that all of the outstanding medical costs will be covered and all of the funds raised will be used for the intended purpose.

There will be several additional opportunities for fund raising. Julie and Brian Leidel will be offering tangible items to take from the memorial service and to give a small token in return.
If you have any questions with regard to additional items or items that can be obtained after the service, you can contact Katie directly at: EricVoigtMemorialFund@gmail.com .
