Harold Eugene "Gene" Maxson, 78-years-old, USAF (retired) after 21 years of service to Austin, Texas, entered his Heavenly home on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at a local hospital in Austin, TX, after complications from a short battle with cancer.
Our dad was born on July 31, 1937 in Canton, Illinois to Jesse and LaFern (Cameron) Maxson. He was known for his ease in conversation and love of story telling with even total strangers. As a child, he was a precocious, spirited child who possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor. Throughout his life he maintained an honest, charming and endearing demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. His signature gift of joy, shown through his constant smiling, laughter, and joking around, will never be forgotten.
Married for 50 years, he and Charlie raised their 5 dear children in Manchaca, Texas. With a real zest for life, Daddy loved to dance with Mama, work on his old cars, reminisce to oldies country music, collect coins, scratch lotto tickets, spend family time doing anything - especially with Mama, chat with friends and family... just to name a few.
His surviving family members are numerous, but mainly include:
Wife of 50 years: Charlotte "Charlie"
Maxson.
Father of 5 Children: Phillip Lane Maxson, Lori Ann Gilbertson (Andy), Barbara Gail Sanchez, Kimberly Anne Boyd (Dale), and Gregory Eugene Maxson (Alma).
Grandfather to 9: Jeremy LeBlanc-Filbert (Amanda), Corey Maxson (Stephanie), Laura and Jesse Boyd, Ashley, Joshua, Hannah, Aaden, and Zoe Maxson, and Ashlee Lauren Gilbertson.
Great Grandfather of 5: Taylor, Jordan, Adlee, and Wyatt Filbert.
Other family members: Sisters in-laws: Ramona (Joe) Szabo and Cheryl (Glenn) Yamada. Unfortunately too many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews to list or count.

Memorial donations can be made to:
a The American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123
a Yet, beyond financial donations, Dad always lived by the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated. i.e. Do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, give a hug, or say "I love you."
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including: South Austin Hospital ICU staff and doctors, family and friends - either through prayer and/or visits, neighbors, and even random acts of kindness through total "strangers".
A special thank you to Josh Rodriguez, owner of Slow Poke BBQ, who helped give Daddy happiness in his last days by giving him one last race in his name, and for hosting our family and close friends at his expense during our time of immense sadness.
