Harriet, a Marine veteran of WWII, lived a full life serving her country and giving love to her family. Upon graduating from high school in Fargo, N.D. she went to stenographer school and afterwards began working for the United States Navy Department in Washington, D. C. first at the bureau of ships pool and then later in one of the busiest war time offices, working under Vice Admiral S.M. Robinson.
In 1943, Harriet joined the Marine Corps and served until 1945 helping to build airplanes during WWII. While in the Marines, she met the love of her life, George Ahoyt who she married on February 16, 1946 in Los Angeles, Ca. They lived in Camp Lejeune, NC, Waukegan, Ill. and San Diego, CA, while George was still in the Marines and then in many Texas border cities, El Paso, McAllen, Roma and Mercedes and then Malone, NY where he worked for the U. S. Border Patrol. They lived in other cities as well, such as Miami, Fla. and Los Angeles, Ca., where he worked for the U.S. Immigration Service. Finally, they settled in Del Rio, Texas in 1966 where her husband continued his work as a Border Patrol Agent until his retirement and unfortunate early decease.
Throughout all these moves and after having and still raising her six beloved children, Harriet began working at Laughlin Air Force Base for the Transportation Department moving families across the nation with the same love and care she had done with own her family. She worked there until her retirement in 1985 with a total of 23 years of Civil Service.
Harriet served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars , Post 8552, in 1988-89, as well as holding many other positions many years prior and after.
She was also a member of the of the Val Verde Memorial Hospital Auxillary, and volunteered there until she was 90 years of age. In fact , Harriet enjoyed many of her favorite past times into her 90's, playing cards with her group of friends, and Bingo at the VFW many nights a week in Del Rio and then later at Granite Mesa in Marble Falls.
Her other interests were bowling, traveling many years to Championship tournaments all over the United States competing and spending much time with her girlfriends of the team on numerous Las Vegas trips at the slot machines. She loved dancing of all kinds and had especially enjoyed square dancing with the Cactus Twirlers and in her later life we always called her our "Dancing Queen".
Volunteering was her joy and reading and books were her passion. When she gave her time at the Val Verde County Library untold people benefited from her grace, laughter and love. She read novels until her eyes failed her.
Our mother, our Mama Mia, our grandmother, great grandmother, our dancing queen and friend who made us laugh won her last Bingo game on June 1st, 2014. Her love for life and people , her kind heart and her dry wit will be missed by so very many.
