Herbert “Bert” Crowson, Jr.
(March 25, 1933 – August 12, 2018)
Bert Crowson was born on March 25, 1933, the oldest of four children born to Herbert Crowson and Ruby Faye (Tatum) Crowson in Morrilton, Arkansas. He attended high school in Gainesville, FL and graduated in 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Korea for a year, then spent the rest of his enlistment at Keesler AFB in Mississippi.
In 1955 he enrolled in Abilene Christian College where he met Alta Ruth Young. They married December 19, 1957. Upon graduation he worked as educational director and congregational song leader in Huntsville, AL, Tulsa, OK, and Austin, TX. Bert also served as the Director of Emergency Management Services at the Texas State Department of Health.
Bert was an elder at the University Avenue Church of Christ and was one of the founders of the Micah 6 food pantry in Austin. He enjoyed photography, music, genealogy research, model airplanes, and creating biographical videos.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Crowson; two sisters: Marian Lewis, Anita (Ken) Roach; a brother: Norman (Sue) Crowson; daughters: Patrice (Steve) Hopkins; Danette (Scott) Mowery; Renee (Bill) Burch; grandchildren: Emily Hopkins, Jonathan Hopkins, Austin Mowery, Daniel (Summer) Mowery, Ruth Mowery, Samuel Mowery, Joshua Mowery, David Lloyd, Kevin Lloyd; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 2:00 pm, September 1st, at University Avenue Church of Christ, Austin.
