Johnnie Herms was born in Elgin, Texas to John Carl Herms and Lillie Lenora Pettit on September 9, 1946 and passed from this life at Seton Medical Center in Austin on July 28, 2015.
The first of four children, he was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lillie Eva Herms and brother Willie Fred "Will" Herms. He is survived by his younger brother Carl Jack Herms and wife Debby, niece Carrie Herms of Houston, nephew Matthew and wife Karen Herms of Katy, niece Sarah Herms of Colorado Springs, Colorado, niece Cecilia Herms-Perich of Oklahoma and numerous cousins.
Johnnie left school at an early age to work with his father in timber cutting in the Central Texas area around Bastrop, Texas. He later worked with his father in providing interment services for Cooper-Newby Funeral Home. Following the death of his father, Johnnie took great pride in providing for his mother and sister by working for the then Travis State School. He held a position there for 20 years, retiring with a disability. Johnnie loved to talk and never met a stranger, always ready to strike up a conversation about whatever subject he was concerned with at the time. He will be sorely missed.
Our family would like to thank the legion of people who cared for Johnnie so compassionately over the years at the then Austin Nursing Center, Monte Siesta Nursing and Rehabilitation, Family Eldercare and Seton Medical Center's fourth floor ICU.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, July 31, 2015 at Ridgeway Cemetery in Paige, Texas. Arrangements by All Faiths of the Pines, Smithville, Texas.
