North Austin Location

John Edgar Redford, Jr., 103-3/4-yrs. young, passed away at home January 7, 2014.

He was born May 3, 1910 in St. Louis, MO to John Edgar Redford, Sr. and his wife, Lily Faes. They had another son, Herbert. When Lily died, John Sr. remarried Hermine. They had three more sons: Harvey, Chester, and Robert. The only surviving sibling, Robert, resides in Downer's Grove, IL with his wife, Shirley.

Edgar is pre-deceased by his wife, Lucille (1914-2003) and only child, Lawrence (1937-1993) and his wife Judith. Edgar and Lou were married on November 2, 1931.

Their son Larry was an accomplished professional engineer. The Mingo Creek Water Conservation Detention site in Tulsa, OK is named after him. He was known for his integrity, faithfulness, unselfish love for others and devotion to duty as his parents taught him.

Edgar joined the US Army Corps of Engineers at Rock Island, Illinois May 15, 1935 as a draftsman. He and his wife, Lou later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. In July of 1939, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma with their son, Larry. Edgar earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree at The University of Tulsa in 1954.
He was a mechanical specialist who inspected large projects for quality assurance and contractual compliance. He and his family later moved to Dallas where Edgar worked in the SW Division of Construction Operations.
He acquired many exemplary honors in his 62 years in federal service, reluctantly retiring in 1997.

Making people happy, especially children, delighted Edgar. He was generous to many. He earned the Masons and Shriners 75 years-of-service honor. Many people remember his sharing candies, fresh vegetables, and his favorite drink - Grand Marnier.

For his 101st birthday party at home, he provided unlimited fresh catfish. The deep frying preparation with hushpuppies was a large group effort celebration that everyone especially enjoyed.

After the death of his wife Lou in September 2003, Edgar moved to Austin, Texas to live with his granddaughter's parents, Ron and Beverly Ball. Over these Austin years, he enjoyed many great friendships, especially with his neighbors and Hyde Park Baptist Church family.
His joyful spirit lives on in our hearts, giving us abiding hope.

Edgar will be laid to rest with his wife at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas.
