Joyce Lovera Cathey was born March 2, 1940 in Elgin, Texas to the late Louis and Lillie Mae Cathey. She was the first daughter born to this union.
Joyce attended Elgin Public Schools where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
Joyce accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Elgin, Texas. Years later, Joyce became a member of Nineteen Street Baptist Church where she faithfully attended services until her health failed.
Joyce worked at Travis State School for many years in food service. Her career then transitioned into the hospital food service administration. She was a Food Service Supervisor for St. David’s Hospital. She eventually retired, but shortly after, returned to work part-time in the kitchen at St. David’s.
Everyone who knew Joyce always knew where to find her, either with her sister, Shirley or reading a book. Joyce loved to read all her life. She traveled the world through books!
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings: Norman, Edward Charles, Bobby Joe, Louis Charles, Martha Lynn, Raymond, Dorothy and Willie.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter Rita (Hakeem) of Waxahachie, Texas, Anthony (Mary) of Pflugerville, Texas, her five grandchildren Christopher (Isela) of Austin, Texas, LaTasha (Russel) of Dallas, Texas, Anthony Jr. (Maria) of Manor, Texas, Roslyn (Joe Ray) of Austin, Texas and Nichelle, of Round Rock, Texas. Nine great grandchildren: Victoria, Gabriella, Preston, Myles, DeAnthony, Kamryn, Saniya, Joe Ray Jr., Nevaeh, Jevalyn, and Trayson. Four sisters: Tommie Nell (Horace), Robbie (James) of Elgin, Texas, Shirley (Emzie) and Bonnie of Austin, Texas. Two brothers: Elmer and Ronald (Carolyn) of Houston, Texas. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
