June Sorensen, 83, of Smithville died on Thursday, July 30th after a lengthy illness. She was born Mary June Randall in Northfield, Massachusetts on June 9, 1932. She was one of 14 children born to Leon and Lillian (Flansburg) Randall.
She enlisted in the Air Force at 19 and eventually began playing basketball and softball on a team representing Sampson Air Force Base. The team travelled across the country playing other Air Force teams. While serving at Sampson AFB in Geneva, New York, she met Sam Sorensen. They married in November of 1957 and eventually settled in central Texas. Upon leaving the Air Force, she worked in various positions with the federal government until she retired to travel with Sam. They returned to Smithville in 1998 to enjoy time with their granddaughters. Always the sports fan, June (or Granny as she has been known to many) never missed one of Lauren or Lindsay's games from Little League to Junior High to All-Stars to High School.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Warren Carver of Smithville; her beloved grandchildren Lindsay Carver and Lauren and Donovan Dillon all of Corpus Christi; and her first great-granddaughter who shares her name, Rowan June Dillon of Corpus Christi.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home.
Memorial gifts in her name may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (a cause she supported for many years), Bastrop Animal Rescue or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements by All Faiths of the Pines, 110 American Legion Rd., Smithville, Texas, 512.237.3836.
