On November 4, 1936, Lillie Mae Hawkins was born to Hattie Morris and James Williams in Vanndale, Arkansas. "Mae" as she was known by her family and friends was the third child of nine children. Mae attended her early education years in Parkin, Arkansas.
Lillie and Rev. Murphy Hawkins, Sr. married in Chicago, Ill., 1956 where they parented their first two children, Patricia and Joyce Hawkins. They resided in Chicago several years before relocating to Los Angeles, CA where they founded Good Shepard C.O.G.I.C. Mae was an exceptional and faithful wife, first lady of Good Shepard C.O.G.I.C. and caregiver to her children and community. Legend has it that, if you ever stopped by her home unannounced she would surely fill you up with her delicious and wholesome cuisine. On Sundays, church members would clamor to catch a seat at Mae's dining table.
As the primary caregiver for her adult disabled son, Murphy "Curly" Hawkins throughout her lifetime she ensured his siblings endearment and protection. Her compassion, steadfastness and commitment to him is unprecedented and demonstrated in her care for him. Mae served her community as an active member of neighborhood watch and would graciously assist those in need. She was witty, thrifty, and resourceful and could go from the kitchen preparing a meal to a repairing a roof without blinking twice.
In Mae's later years she and Curly relocated to Austin, Texas where several of her grandchildren reside. She and Murphy were loved and cared for by her eldest granddaughter, TaShauna Haynes. In a short span of time Mae visited her relatives in Wynne, Arkansas, traveled to San Antonio and enjoyed many family gatherings with her grand and great grandchildren. She laughed and danced and had a light heart and shared more of her jovial and humorous nature.
