Louis (Lou) Spellman was born to Louis U. Spellman and Laura Smith Spellman on June 3,
1925, in Midland, Texas. He lived in San Angelo in his younger years and graduated from
Corpus Christi High School. After attending Del Mar College he was accepted into
Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame and served as a gunnery officer aboard the USS
Amsterdam in the southwest Pacific during World II. Afterward he graduated from
Southwestern University with a BS in physics and mathematics. In 1950 he began a 50+ year
career in the cement manufacturing business. He retired in 1986 as executive vice president of
Atlantic Cement Company.
Lou is predeceased by his parents and brother, Dr. Norman Spellman. He is survived by his
wife, June, of Lakeway, Texas; son Paul Spellman of Richmond, Texas; daughter Lauran
Hamby of Corpus Christi, Texas and Martha Root of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren, Matthew
Spellman and Paula Glinski as well as three great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are
numerous nieces and nephews as well as three loving stepchildren, James Malek, Lisa Malek
and Blake Whitehead.
Lou was a lifelong Methodist and sang many years in various choral groups. He was active in
church work throughout his life. He loved tennis and golf and played both well.
He was a devoted Christian, a loving father and husband and will be missed by all.
