Lucy Stackhouse

January 31, 1943 — January 29, 2015

North Austin Location

Lucy Mae Stackhouse, age 71 of Smithville, TX went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 29, 2015.

She was born January 31, 1943 in Terra Alta, WV to the late Glen and Lucy Tasker. As a child, she loved school and always had her nose in a book.

She is survived by a sister, Leanna Mersing, a brother, Jesse Tasker and preceded in death by brothers, Dale and Glen R. Tasker.

Lucy graduated high school at age 16 and moved to NJ with plans to attend nursing school. Due to her young age, those plans did not come to fruition, however, she met and married the love of her life, Thomas E. Stackhouse. They were married January 27, 1962 in Moorestown, NJ. They lived and raised their four children in South Jersey. Lucy was a devoted wife and homemaker with various part time jobs.

The family spent summers camping and boating. While Tom went out in the boat with the kids, Lucy enjoyed the quiet time reading and making a home cooked meal for their return. In the evening, they all sat by a crackling campfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing the day's events.

Lucy had an exceptional talent for making crafts. She painted beautiful ceramic figurines in her early years. Her ability to sew, knit, crochet and quilt was impeccable. Her granddaughters were blessed recipients of many lovely dresses, stuffed dolls and doll clothes.
She was an excellent cook and she loved having friends and family over for dinner. Everything she cooked was delicious but a favorite meal among the family is roast beef, mashed potatoes and the best gravy ever. Her baking was also exceptional, especially her apple pie, pumpkin pie and banana cake. She made beautifully decorated cakes for family and friends after taking a course.

Lucy was a competitive and savvy player of cards and board games, which she and Tom played often with friends. She also liked doing puzzles, crossword puzzles and search words.

Her collections included coins, dolls, teddy bears and other country knickknacks with which her house was decorated.

Lucy's love for Christmas was known by all who knew her. Not only did she host a wonderful Christmas Eve party for family and friends, but she did almost all of the cooking and baking. She made Christmas fun and special by decorating the house from floor to ceiling, inside and out. On Christmas morning, she made a special breakfast for her family and served it on the fine china. Her excitement radiated as she lavished gifts upon her loved ones, especially the grandchildren.

Lucy longed to travel the country in a motor home and when Tom retired in 2000, her dream became a reality. They sold their house and began a new venture. They joined RVICS Ministries and travelled the country volunteering their services to Christian organizations. She used her sewing talents, as well as painted, cleaned, laundered and did other various tasks as needed.

In 2012, she and Tom settled in Smithville, TX among fellow RVICS members and friends. Lucy was no longer able to travel due to the progression of her Alzheimer's disease. Her love and adoration for Tom was obvious until her last year of life when she was no longer able to show him. Her death came about after many months of being patiently cared for by her loving "Mr. Tom". She received hospice care for 12 days in The Towers of Smithville where she died peacefully listening to a favorite hymn "How Great Thou Art".

Lucy is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas E. Stackhouse. Children: Thomas D. (Joy) Stackhouse of Barrington, Wendy (Joe) Mayo of Barrington, David Stackhouse of Erial, Cindy Stackhouse (Jeff) of Somerdale; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
