Mae Pearl Leonard was born June 26, 1930. She is the oldest of five children born to Edna and Curley Leonard. Her parents and three siblings Naomi, Leonard, Alice Hoodye, and Otis Leonard all proceded her in death.
Mae graduated from Emile High School in Bastrop, Texas. After graduation she moved to Houston, Texas and continued her education in cosmetology.
In 1959 Mae moved to Los Angeles, California; there she became a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and pursued that vocation for years. At the same time she was pursing studies in Real Estate.
Mae returned to Bastrop in 1979 and was employed at one of the Rehabilitation Facilities for a short period of time. After which, she moved to Austin. Texas and became Activist. She believes in fairness and justice for everyone. Mae was recognized on several occasions for work on behalf of the Citizenry of Austin by the NAACP. When there was a lack of representation of minorities in the Fire Department, Police Department or Constable's Office, Mae was out front speaking for promotions or recognitions. She represented State Employees via Union and worked tirelessly on their behalf to improve working conditions, compensation, professional development, vacation leave, sick leave, paid holidays and retirement programs. She continued to work for the State and several Nursing Homes until her health failed.
Mae was also the voice for the Craigwood Neighborhood Association Association. She chaired this group and coalesced with other to make for stronger neighbohoods,

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at All Faiths Funeral Services, 8507 N. IH-35, Austin, Texas, 78753.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church,507 Toliver Street, Bastrop, Texas, 78602. Interment will follow the funeral service at Clear View Cemetery, Bastrop, Texas.
