Marcia Henderson

Marcia Hathaway Henderson died July 5, 2013 in Austin, Texas. She had been a resident of Denton, Texas since 1957, and had recently moved to Austin.

Marcia was the only child of Edward Sturtevant Hathaway and Emma Gahagan Hathaway of New Orleans. She was born July 1, 1925 in Madison, Wisconsin, where her father was finishing graduate studies.

She grew up in New Orleans, where she graduated from Isidore Newman School, and received the B.A. degree in music from Newcomb College of Tulane University in 1947. In 1949 she received the M.A. degree from Teachers College of Columbia University. She later did additional summer study at the University of London and at Harvard University.

For three years Marcia served on the faculty of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, and then taught for one year at Sul Ross State College in Alpine, Texas, where she met her future husband, who was also a new faculty member.
She married Samuel Howard Henderson III on August 26, 1957 in New Orleans. The couple then moved to Denton, where Samuel was a faculty member at the University of North Texas.

For most of her adult life, Marcia was a church musician, serving as organist and choir director in many different churches and in a synagogue. In the Denton area she played and directed at St. David's Episcopal Church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Gainesville.

She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church where she was a choir member, reader, vestry member and senior warden.
Marcia was an early member of the Denton Bach Society, and sang with its chorus for a number of years. She had also been a member of the Music Department of the Ariel Club. Her interest in politics led to her serving a term as president of the Denton County Democratic Women's Club.

In their retirement years the Hendersons enjoyed genealogical research and foreign travel. They were life members of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, and Marcia was a member of The Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Marcia is survived by her husband; two children, Howard Peyton Henderson and Ashley Henderson Barrett; and five grandchildren: Katherine Henderson, Peyton Henderson, Jr., William Henderson, Andrew Barrett and Daniel Barrett.

Memorial service will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Denton on Saturday, July 20 at 11:00 am....
