Melvin Carl McKinney, born March 22nd 1921 to Birt & Addie McKinney
at Rainbow, Somervill County Texas. Both his parents and one sister and two brothers preceded him in death. In 1936 Rep. Vernon Lemens came to him and asked if he would come and help him campaign for the Senate seat in that district and if he gets elected he would take him to Austin as his special page.
He took the job at age of 14 and Vernon was elected to the Senate and that is how he got to Austin. He worked for Vernon until the next election
and Vernon was elected for another 4 year term. In 1942 he was drafted into the army for World War II. He served three years and fought in the Italian Campaign in the 88th. Inf. Div.
Vernon owned a Finance Co. in Austin and asked him to come to work there after the war. He worked 30 years there and also founded McKinney Auto Sales which he ran for 50 years. Vernon & Lylia Lemens were a big influence
in his bringing up he was considered as family.
Surviving Loving son Mel McKinney Jr., Step-Son Jerry Miller and wife CeCi,
Step daughter Joanne Majaka and husband Bob, Adopted daughter Karen Croft Shakley, Loving sister Effie Starnes, Extended family Bill & Melissa Jackson and their daughters Katie Makeley & special grand daughter Faith Jackson. Also extended family Joe and Rachael Lopez, Best friend and long time employee Rev. Melvin best friend and long time companion dog Annie
several loving Nieces & Nephews.
Visitation Service will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at All Faiths Funeral Service, 4360 S. Congress Ave., Austin, Tx.. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday at 11:30am at the Squaw Creek Cemetery in Rainbow, Texas.
