Edris Naomi Knight (nAC.e Brown) died in her home on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in Austin, TX surrounded by her loving family.
She was born 88 years ago in the remote village of Freetown on the Caribbean island of Antigua. Her parents Thomas Brown and Margaret Roseau instilled moral and spiritual values in all of their children.
As a young girl, she was very involved with church activities. She attended the local Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was renowned for her beautiful voice. In later years, she attended the Church of the Nazarene in St. John's, Antigua.
Under the guidance of her Godmother Perla and cousin Georgina, Edris became an extraordinary seamstress known around the island for her lovely wedding, church and formal occasion creations. She worked tirelessly and was utterly devoted to her craft. Edris created these beautiful garments entirely freehand, without the use of patterns.
She married Theodore Knight on May 24, 1956. Edris loved to travel and became a permanent resident of the United States in 1983. She chose to live in Austin, TX, a place she loved dearly. She cared deeply about the close friends she made during this time, calling a few of them her "adopted children". She worked at St. David's Hospital as a nurse's aid in the mother-baby ward. Edris also became a faithful member of the South Austin Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday School, helped with church ministries, and became well-known for her gardening, sewing, baking and fashion.
She is preceded in death by her husband Theodore Knight; son Oswald Knight; older brother Arthur Cochrane; sisters Beryl Charles, Ethlyn and Hyacinth Brown. She is survived by her daughter Yvette Knight-Medcalf; son Winston Brown; granddaughters Bosede Aliu-Combs and Aniyia Williams; five great-grandchildren, nieces Audrey Lake, Lynette Gumbs, Janice Charles, Diane Thomas, Denise and Bevleigh Cochrane; nephews Aston Benjamin, James and Jeff Cochrane, Patrick and Reynold Charles Jr.; 4 great-nephews, 15 great-nieces, and a host of special relatives and friends.
