North Austin Location

Quintessential Austinite Paul Merton Berry Jr passed on May 26th, 2017. Preceded in death by Father Paul Sr, Mother Cora Louise Berry (Benoit), Sister Melissa and Brother Philip, he is survived by Sister Paula and Brother John, along with loving Nephews Derek and Wesley, and Nieces Jordan and Shannon, who knew Paul as the ‘coolest Uncle on the planet’ that always encouraged them to live life to the fullest.

Paul visited every single Austin Park multiple times, where he could be found tossing the Frisbee with friends, climbing cliffs, swimming in local springs, rivers and lakes, enjoying the nature trails, or simply tanning on a rock. Over the decades he could often be found below Barton Springs or on the Greenbelt walking his many dogs that he rescued from abandonment or neglect. From the Armadillo and free concerts at Auditorium Shores to the Soap Creek Saloon and Super Drum, Paul was there enjoying the music, that’s for sure!

Paul was passionate about many things and gave generously to those in need. He was well-read on history and world affairs, and had a deep respect for the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the liberties they provide. Over the years he developed a tremendous appreciation for those in the US Military who provide their service and sacrifice to help preserve our freedoms. He contributed to the Wounded Warrior Project, and, from the time he was a young man, routinely gave generously to Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, Blue Santa, and other charities focused on helping children.

His friends from Sacred Heart Elementary through High School at LBJ and Reagan will remember Paul as an expert on snakes, a speed-reader, a gifted tennis player, an exceptional basketball player and an extremely strong long-distance swimmer. Those who met Paul later in life recognize him as one of the best dart throwers and ping-pong players they’ve ever known.

Thank you, Paul, for sharing all these things with us and for hosting all those many sporting events, ping-pong matches and dart tournaments. One thing for sure: If you arrived at Paul’s door and heard Stevie-Ray belting out “If the house is a rockin, don’t bother knockin,” then you knew you were welcome to just come on in. You will be missed, Paul, but never forgotten – may God bless your soul with peace and love.
