Richard Lee Lopez, age 70, passed away on October 12, 2024, gaining his wings with grace and dignity. Born on November 16, 1953, in Austin, Texas, Richard lived a life filled with love, service, and devotion to his family and country.
Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force from January 1973 to June 1989, where he earned numerous accolades, including the AF Longevity Service Award and Defense Service Medal, among other commendations. He was honorably discharged, having made a lasting impact through his dedication and commitment.
Richard found immense joy in the simple moments shared with loved ones, whether gathering with family and friends, enjoying breakfast together, or cheering for his favorite teams—the Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys. Known as “Tio” to many, he was a selfless, caring soul with a heart of gold who never hesitated to help whenever he could. His family was everything to him, and he loved them deeply.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Enrique (Henry) and Julia Lopez; his infant brother; brother John Lopez; sisters Herminia (Minnie) Lopez, Leonila Lopez, Henrietta (Henna) Lopez, Judy Lopez-Gloria; cousin, Paula Rene Hernandez and many other cherished family members who are now welcoming him at Heaven's gates.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Shannon L. Merchant; his sisters Josie Lopez Hernandez and Gloria Lopez; his brother Michael Lopez; and his dear niece, Julia A. Lopez. Richard also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will remember his love and generosity always.
Richard will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Services, located at 8507 N Interstate 35 Frontage Rd., Austin, TX 78753. For further information, please contact the funeral home at 512-339-8878.
