Richard Schaffer

Richard Allen Schaffer was born in Brownwood, Texas on October 20, 1931 to Harry Andrew and Iola Evangeline Bell Schaffer. He departed this life on October 27, 2014

Richard moved with his family to Victoria, Texas when he was 10 years old and attended St. Joseph Catholic Schools. When Harry and Eva opened Schaffer's Card Shop at 813 Congress, Richard moved with the family to Austin, where he attended St. Edwards High School for his senior year and St. Edwards University before joining the United States Navy in 1950. Richard had several assignments in the Navy including a posting to the ship yards in Yokosuka, Japan in 1951 and 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He was later selected to assist in the preparations on Bikini Atoll in advance of the Nuclear Bomb Test, Operation Castle- Bravo. After leaving the Navy in 1954, Richard attended and graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering before returning to Austin. Richard was engaged in the Air Conditioning/Heating industry in Austin for over 40 years and was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 286 for most of the period. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church for more than 50 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Fraternity for a number of years. After retiring in 1996, he and wife, Pat enjoyed traveling the USA from coast to coast in their RV. They were members of the Rolling Wheels RV Club, attending many happy monthly outings with the group.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, mother and only sibling, Victor E. Schaffer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia A. Schaffer, son and wife, Charles E. (Chuck) and Bernice Schaffer, daughters and husbands, Lynn S. and Philip V. Beaver and Holly A. Tuccio and Bruce M. Carroll, all of Austin. By grandchildren, Tara and husband Richard Bonds of Elgin, Eric and wife Julia Beaver, Nicholas Allen Tuccio of Austin and step-granddaughter, Cheryl Place of Ft. Worth. Four Great-Grandchildren: Avery and Richard Henry Bonds, Arlo and Rory Beaver. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Ann W. Schaffer and nieces, Lisa A. Schaffer and M. Martha Nalepa and family.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 126 W. Oltorf Street at 10:00 A.M. on October 31, 2014. A Recitation of Holy Rosary, to be held at 7:00pm at St. Ignatius Church, October 30, 2014.
