Ronald Dewaine Leatherman was born October 17, 1942 in Floydada, Texas. He grew up on a farm in Millsap, Texas with his parents Dewey and Virgie Leatherman and 3 siblings. As a child he learned to love the great outdoors and became skilled with his hands. He Graduated from Millsap High School and attended Wayland Baptist College.
Ron met his wife, Kay Elizabeth Pope, in Houston, Texas where they attended the same church and were married in 1972. Shortly afterwards they moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he managed a small industrial sales business. He later moved his family to Austin and learned a self-taught trade using the many skills he learned growing up on his family farm to start an office furniture repair business. He eventually founded and developed Leatherman Services, Inc. repairing surfaces of all kinds for commercial builders throughout Texas, presently operated by his son and grandson.
Ron had a deep relationship with the Lord Jesus. As a young teen, he began to have a deep passion for God and always enjoyed telling others about Him, studying and discussing the Bible and sharing that love with people. He really loved life and people in general and would drop whatever he was doing to help someone in need, or just to talk. Later in his life he wrote and published 2 books telling of his life growing up on the family farm.
Ron was a hard worker and was dedicated to providing a good life for his family, working up until he became ill. He passed away on August 11, 2021 and was preceded in death by his father and mother Dewey and Virgie Leatherman and siblings Betty Wright and Don Leatherman. He is survived by his wife Kay Leatherman, his sister Helen Virginia Lewis, his 3 children Carla Rodriguez, Michael Simon Leatherman, and Shelly McCoy, as well as 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandsons.
Ron had a heart of compassion for the needy, particularly those living in dark places under spiritual oppression. For years he has been giving to Touch of Christ ministries whose mission is to “bring Christ glory by ministering Redemption’s truths to the Muslim masses and the persecuted church worldwide.” We all want to honor him by asking that in lieu of flowers, donations would be made to Touch of Christ Ministries.
