Sammy Ray McDowell was born on June 5, 1943 in El Paso, Texas to Sue Willie Mayes and Willie McDowell. He attended school in the El Paso School District. As a young man, Sammy enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Over the years, Sammy held many jobs. Yet he was most fond of his work with the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services for the Blind for 22 years until his retirement in 2012. Sammy was a quiet man with a giving spirit who enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and watching old western movies. He was a faithful member of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church.
Sammy will be truly missed by all of those who were privileged to be in his life. He has eight Brothers and one Sister. He was also extremely proud to have three handsome Sons, Kelly Ray McDowell, Kenny Earl McDowell and Vincent McDowell born to his first wife, Ida McDowell.
Sammy was united in marriage to Joyce (Monroe) Ford for more than 30 years. To this union he became a father to three Step-Sons, Paul Kelvin Monroe and Patrick Monroe.
Sammy was a beloved Husband and Father.. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving Wife: Joyce McDowell; Sons: Kelly McDowell, Vincent McDowell (Anndrena) and Patrick Monroe; Six grandchildren: Ciriya McDowell, Kenndell McDowell, Arrian McDowell, Kyran Monroe and Kari Monroe; Brothers: Lee Arthur McDowell, Lee Andrew Mayes, Jr. (Rose), Charles Nunn (Shatema), Willie Nunn, Leonard Nunn and Edward Nunn; Sister: Sue Mayes; Special Niece and Nephew: Samantha and Roy West and a host of other Nieces and Nephews; Special Aunt: Bertha Urdy and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, his Brothers Willie James McDowell, David McDowell and Vernon Mayes, his Son Kenny and Step-Sons Paul and Kelvin.
Visitation Service will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 8507 N. IH-35, Austin Texas. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2015 at 12:00pm at Providence Primitive Baptist Tabernacle, 120 N Gaines Rd., Cedar Creek, TX 78612.
Internment Committal Service will follow in Mount Olive Cemetery, 184 Mount Olive Rd., Cedar Creek, Texas.
