Sharon Nance

December 25, 1956 — August 22, 2015

North Austin Location

Sharon Renee Nickerson Nance was born to the union of Leon and Bobbie Nickerson on December 25, 1956 in Taylor, Texas. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

A 1975 graduate of Taylor High School, Sharon played the flute in the marching band and became the first and only African American twirler.

She studied at Prairie View A&M University and graduated from Baldwin Beauty School. Sharon owned and operated Glamour Worx Hair Salon for more than 20 years where many of her faithful clients became members of her extended family.

Sharon was a naturally gifted artist who was featured in the Austin American Statesman for her African-inspired sculpture pieces created entirely from recycled paper. In addition to sculpture and painting, she also designed jewelry and performed in a production of the musical Bubblin' Brown Sugar at Zachary Scott Theatre.

Although gifted with many abilities and talents, Sharon often expressed that her greatest gift was her daughter BiAnca.

Sharon was diagnosed with Stage IV ovarian cancer in 2007 and given only three months to live. By the grace of God six years later, she received the American Cancer Association's "Texas Sunrise Award" for her volunteer work with their "Look Good, Feel Better" program.

A natural beauty, she was selected as a print and video spokesperson for Texas Oncology's "I CAN" campaign and produced a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/sharonrnanceful/videos?sort=da&flow=grid&view=0) documenting her battle with cancer.

She leaves to cherish her memory husband, Kenneth G. Nance, daughter BiAnca LaPrelle Petroy, two stepsons and a stepdaughter, parents Leon D. and Bobbie V. Nickerson, sisters Carla Nickerson-Adams (Willis) and Danita L. Nickerson and brother Justin C. Nickerson; nieces Kristen M. Williams and Sigele A. Nickerson-Adams, nephews Philip D. Nickerson, Bryce A. Peterson and Reid J. Nickerson; aunts Frankie Zachary and Ada Edwards and great-niece Sarai N. Williams. She also leaves a host of cousins, clients and loyal, supportive friends.

Sharon will remain forever in our hearts and will continue to inspire others through the video chronicles of her journey, the memory of her radiant smile, her infectious laughter and her signature "Smooches!"
