June 12, 1958 — January 20, 2013

North Austin Location

Alex Hutson, age 54, lost his 17 month battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer on January 20, 2013. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Alex was born June 12, 1958, in Childress, Texas, to Mary Ruth and Tom Hutson. Alex moved numerous times in childhood, and then moved in with his Aunt Margaret and Uncle Co Westenburg in Childress when he was 10. He loved the freedom of small town life, playing multiple sports and working on the farm. He played with his Childress Bobcats football team in the Class 2AA state championship his senior year in high school.
He attended the University of Texas and for four years was the equipment manager for the UT baseball team. He graduated with an education degree and worked as a teacher and coach in Lufkin and Corpus Christi until he stayed home to raise his three children. Alex touched the lives of hundreds of kids through his volunteer coaching of youth sports - baseball, softball, football, basketball. He taught them in sports and in life you work hard, play fair and enjoy yourself.
Alex served for six years on the Rollingwood Park Commission, four years as chairman, where he oversaw numerous improvements to the park, including the design and installation of the playscape.
Alex excelled at making friends, and of making friends between his friends. Anyone he met was fair game. He could and would talk to anyone and everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Sara; daughter Maggie and her husband Dustin Behnke; sons Thomas "Sandy" and Rusty; brothers Joe and Brent; sister Evelyn; father Tom; Aunt and Uncle Margaret and Co Westenburg, and multiple nieces and nephews.
His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday January 24, 2013 at Westlake United Methodist Church on Redbud Trail. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to MD Anderson (www.mdanderson.org/gifts) or to pancreatic cancer research at the UVA HealthCenter(http://uvahealth.com/about/giving)in his honor.
