Walter Mayfield Merchant
, 87, of Marble Falls, became our guardian angel Feb 18, 2014. He was a loving father & husband. He loved & cherished all of his family & friends. He could light your darkest days by his beautiful smile & laughter, sense of humor & tell stories untold & forgotten.
Walter served in the United States Navy as Seaman Second Class & received an honorable discharge & received medals from Point System, World War II victory & American Campaign. He studied Biology & graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX He furthered his education & graduated in 1949 from University of Texas with a B.A. in Mathematics. He housed UT students, cooked, cleaned, made dinner packages & delivered to other fraternities after game day. He was a life member of University of Texas “Ex-Student’s Association”, a board member of University Optimist & loved his Longhorns.
Walter is preceded in death by his mother & father Gladys & Walter “Hub” Merchant & brother Donnie Bob Merchant & son Payne Walker. He is survived by his wife Patty Merchant, daughter Donna Merchant, son-in-law Keith Hanson, grandsons Sean Girard & wife April, David Thompson & wife Kim, Miguel Reyes, 5 great grandsons, Miguel Jr, Michael, Trace, Garrett, Lil Payne, 3 great granddaughters Ashley, Sarah, Jessica, sister Barbara Kuntz & husband Elmer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws & many dear friends. A special thanks to all the wonderful nurses & staff at Granite Mesa Health Center for excellent care.
Memorial Service will be held at Granite Mesa Health Center, 1401 Max Copeland Dr., Marble Falls, TX on Saturday, April 26, 2014 @ 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to National Parkinson’s Foundation http://www.parkinson.org/, Granite Mesa Health Center or church of your choice. Services provided by All Faith’s Funeral, Granite Mesa Health Center & Naval Honor Guard.
