William Ferris

January 25, 1949 — October 25, 2014

North Austin Location

William Howard Ferris was born January 25, 1949, in Oakland, California, to Barbara and Wilkie Ferris. As a young boy, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he remained through high school. Bill then moved to Austin, Texas, where he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas.

Bill was known for his gregararious personality, his sarcastic quick wit, his openness with people from all walks of life, and his grand generosity. Bill could connect with anyone. He could easily stand out in any room, with his 6-foot-4 stature, his beautiful silver hair and charming smile. It was not uncommon to see him with a toothpick in his mouth and chapstick in his pocket. Bill found the most effective way of communicating to be either in all CAPS or in black permanant marker.

When you spoke with Bill, it did not take long to understand what made him proud. His 30-year career building Lone Star Interiors, supporting his employees and their families with abundance and love in the way he knew how to show it. Bill started Lone Star with only $5,000 in his pocket, and with his intelligence and the ability to lead, he created a company that helped many thrive. He was proud of his children: Wade for his big heart and humor, and Amber for her passion and determined spirit.

For those who had the pleasure (or pain) of engaging in a political conversation with Bill, they knew him to be a loyal Democrat who believed that all people should be provided equal opportunity by their elected govenerment. His political fervor dates back to college where he majored in political science and became active in numerous peace movements.

Bill loved good food, both preparing and eating it -- the spicier the better! Bill loved all kinds of music, and genuinely enjoyed seeing his many dear friends and loved ones perform live. Music, food and art played a huge role in Bill's life -- his appetite was not easily satisfied!

He was lovingly known by his numerous friends and family as Billy, Willy, William, Bill and Dad. It is these friends and family who will miss him terribly and remember him fondly. He made us laugh. He made our lives more colorful.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov 1st at 11 AM. The location will be Fiesta Gardens at Edward Rendon Metro Park, 2101 Jesse E Segovia Street, Austin, Texas.
