William Whan

January 24, 1930 — December 8, 2013

North Austin Location

After almost 84 years of a life well-lived, Bill Whan passed away peacefully on December 8, 2013.

He was born January 24, 1930 in Pennsylvania to Samuel Whan and Laura Whan (nee Trowbridge). Bill
grew up in Pennsylvania, and served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, he married the love of his life, Barbara Stevenson, to whom he was wed for 60 years. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, they settled in California, where they started their family.

Bill loved spending time with family and friends at Lake Tahoe and Lake Berryessa, skiing, fishing, and socializing. He was very involved with his children, including many Boy Scout and Girl Scout camping trips and attending their school activities.
He enjoyed travelling with family and friends including a very memorable trip in 1969 where they left CA and travelled to the east coast, visiting Washington DC, New York City, Niagara Falls, and many destinations in between.

Bill had a meaningful career as an Aerospace manager with Lockheed, where he forged many life-long
friendships and had the respect of his peers. He was proud to work on Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite to orbit the earth; the International Space Station; Aquila, the first major unmanned aircraft; and numerous
other classified programs. Bill retired after more than 35 years with Lockheed and began a well-earned retirement filled with travels with family and friends, lots of golf, relaxing with his dog and a Western novel, and spending time enjoying his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Barbara; brother Larry Lueke; son Mark and wife Joyce of
Colorado, daughter Cindy and husband Donald Hanson of Austin, son Steve of California; grandchildren Stacy Minion, Amy Morgan and husband Jason, Ryan Whan, Timothy Hanson, Megan Hanson, Daniel Hanson, and Lindsey Apodaca; great-grandchildren Christian and Caleb Minion and Dean Morgan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Don and Peg Stevenson, his sister Ella Witzka, his brother-in-law and friend Bill Stevenson, and his granddaughter Melissa Hanson.

We will remember and celebrate the remarkable life that was Bill Whan's. We will recall how he enjoyed life and how his most treasured activity was spending time with his family.

The family will recieve friends at a visitation from 12-3 p.m. On Saturday, December 14 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel at 4360 South Congress Avenue, Suite 115 at West St. Elmo next to Hill's Cafe. A Memorial Service will follow at 4 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church at 5226 W. William Cannon
