George Thompson, Jr.

November 2, 1934 — March 5, 2023

Austin, TX

On Sunday, March 5, 2023, George Thompson Jr. after 88 memorable and vibrant years, received his wings, and went to his heavenly home.

George was born November 2, 1934, in Greenwood, Mississippi to the proud parents of George Thompson and Maude (Moore) Thompson.

George would often tell stories of his mother sending his brothers to work in the fields picking cotton. He would hide and tell his mother he missed his ride and subsequently made his way to the golf course, where he earned money as a caddy.  He earned more money than his brothers, caddying at the golf course, which is where his love of golf began. During his years of caddying, he was fortunate to establish a relationship with an avid golfer who nurtured his fondness for the game.

He married Lillie Mae Price on June 9, 1957, who preceded him in death on November 18, 1987. Together they had six children.

George served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years, earning the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He retired in 1977 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After retirement, he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Albuquerque.

George had many successful business ventures in Albuquerque.  He was a hard-working, self-made businessman.  In 1985 he moved to Austin, Texas where he started several business ventures.  He operated businesses until 1987, following the death of his wife, Lillie.  George also worked as a substitute teacher for the Austin Independent School District. As a substitute teacher, he had a positive and lasting impact on students.

George was an avid golfer. He spent many weekends working at the golf course and perfecting his swing. He played among some of the golf greats such as Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, and Nancy Lopez. He was active in the community and a longtime member of Civitan International, where he served as District President and Club Builder.  He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

George married Kathryn Smith on July 20, 2008, in Austin Texas. They enjoyed 14 years together until his death. George and Kathryn spent many wonderful years together traveling, hosting family and holiday events, attending family gatherings, and enjoying their children and grandchildren.

George was a faithful member of St Peter’s United Methodist Church, in Austin, Texas. He was actively involved in the United Methodist Men's group until the progression of his illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Eugene Lott, Thomas B. Thompson, Elam Thompson, Luke Thompson and his sisters, Lear Jane Williams, Carrie Page, Nettie Jean Neal.

George leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Kathryn Smith Thompson; children, George Maurice Thompson, Cynthia Diane Crawford, Cheryl (Mike) Red, Carol (Albert) Johnson, Dr. Connie Thompson, and Charlene (Darryl) Burgess; bonus sons,  Marshall Smith, Steve (Christi) Smith, Albert (AJ) Smith, and Reginald Crawford.

He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
