Richard Harrigan

July 19, 1976 — November 7, 2022

North Austin Location

Richard Anthony “Speedy” Harrigan was born July 19, 1976 in Austin, Texas to Kathleen J. Harrigan (Lewis) and Arthur Lee Earls Sr,. He attended Austin Public School, L.L Campbell, Kealing Junior High and McCallum High, and received his GED to attend Barber School.

Richard was best known by his nickname Speedy or Lil’ Speedy. As a child, he enjoyed playing by himself, or you could catch him running behind his siblings. Speedy enjoyed the spotlight; he was always the first to raise his hand to be the lead character of any church or school play. He always kept a smile on his face, even when he was in trouble. His sister Sonya quoted “ Speedy was in trouble a lot ”. Speedy enjoyed spending quality time with his grandmothers, especially when they were cooking soul food.

In Speedy’s later years, you could always catch him running or hanging around his childhood friend. He was best known for reading books, writing poetry, and cutting hair - even if he messed it up.

As a young father, Speedy was always trying to find new ways to bond with his daughter, Larika. When he found out that he was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 22, he was strong, and decided he didn't want his family to worry. Speedy would always say “ GOD got me and I will never stop fighting .” Speedy made it his priority to spend quality time with family no matter his circumstances; cancer would not defeat him.

Recently, he found out he had a son named Amos; when he saw Amos' picture, he said “ Oh My God, I thought that was me! ” sadly he didn't get a chance to meet Amos, but he spoke of him often. He would say " He looks just like me and Larika; I can't wait until they meet. "

You could always find Speedy at his father’s house with a smile on his face, listening to music. The Prodigy Child knew his time was coming to an end, and all he wanted to do was spend it at his father’s house where he grew up. Speedy always said “ When it’s my time to go, I want to be at home.

Speedy has won his 24 years battle with cancer and transitioned his life on November 7th, 2022. Preceding his death are his grandparents Corine Cyphers-Thorne, Ronald J. Harrigan, Johnnie Mae Sistrunk and Earlie J. Earls Sr., as well as his brother Aronzo Deshon “Shon” Earls.

He is survived by his parents Kathleen J. Harrigan-Lewis (Anthony), his father Arthur Lee Earls Sr, his brothers Arthur Lee “Buggy” Earls Jr (Adrianne & Aramis), Darryl Louis Earls, Alan Lamont Harrigan (Dina and Alantay), Brion Waters (Tonya, Jayden & Isaiah), and Nathaniel Keith Earls; His sisters Tavonia Carr, Sonya Denise Manor (Daren)Megan West, Natasha Earls-Jones (Liana), along with a host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and friends.
